Color Combinations

Last fall I got obsessed with planting tulips and daffodils. Knowing I would love the spring flowers unfolding, I lost track after 300 bulbs. In fact, I forgot which ones I planted and where!

The tulips and daffodils have been a pleasant color sensation amidst our dreary, rainy spring.

I must share with you the color combination that is unfolding before my eyes. Dark, dark purple, almost black tulips and apricot pink tulips with a backdrop of yellow daffodils and green foliage. Absolutely STUNNING!

Daffodils Out, Tulips In

Changing of the guards at my house; daffodils are slowing dying and the tulips are starting to emerge.

I love the love the colors!

Here is my first patch of tulips:

They are just asking to be subject matter for tomorrow's
Sunday Sketch.

Color YES!

It is that time of year when a splash of color in the yard instantly puts a smile on my face. I do not know about you, but the browns and grays of winter tend to become monotonous after awhile. Spring bulbs to the rescue!

Color speaks to the artist in me. With a couple of non-rainy days here in Washington the daffodils and anemones are showing their heads. I planted about 300 bulbs last spring and am rejoicing at their appearance.

I am learning patience. Last spring I planted English Daisies from seed and surprisingly I was able to distinguish the plants from weeds. All summer long I kept weeding around the plants. To my amazement, they are now flourishing and blooming!

Now the challenge is to keep this beautiful color from the slugs!

I have my defense.....a six pound jug of Sluggo.

Resiliency

Here in the Pacific Northwest we have experienced just about every kind of weather; snow, freezing temperatures, unusually warm temperatures, buckets of rain, wind, you name it.

Today as I survey my yard during a rather balmy break from the rain, I notice little shoots of daffodils poking their heads out from the ground. To my amazement, I found primrose in bloom and buds forming.

Talk about resiliency!

What a refreshing break from the drabness of winter.

Hope the slugs are hibernating :)

Signs of Spring?

About this time of year the stores tease us with colorful flowers to lift our spirits. I am definitely a "sucker" to buy. I could not pass by the primroses without loading a couple in my basket. Eagerly, I planted them in pots and set the primroses on the deck railing so that I could enjoy the vision of spring from every vantage point.

It looks like the ground hog was right! To my surprise this morning my beautiful primroses were wearing snowflakes. And the daffodils look rather charming with dapples of snow.

Still a lovely picture of spring, wouldn't you agree?
